I did oftenwonder that about the films.
What was the Empire doing that was actually evil?
Sure, they had storm-troopers walking round, but you could still get in fights in bars and have smuggling rings, etc. so they obviously weren't any good.
The way I look at it the Rebel Alliance are nothing more than some insurgency group killing storm-troopers like fodder when we all well know they wouldn't hit anyone anyway - leaving countless families without any bread-winner. Also, fuck knows how many civilians they've managed to kill in all their bravado, not like they'd give a shit. Okay, okay, the Empire destroyed one planet, collateral, they needed to send out a message to these terrorists that there will be no negotiations.
Maybe that's the hidden moral of the story... maybe there is a joke on us that we all believe the rebels are good merely because we are told they are so, but without any real reason to back up our beliefs. Oh, wait, it's George Lucas, forget that.
