As above...stainless doesn't generally attract magnets. There are a couple of exceptions, but for the most part, the easiest test to see if a piece of steel is stainless is to try and stick a magnet to it. I've done it a million times when sifting through the dirty metal offcuts looking for a usable bit.
But by the sounds of it, the girl was a liar anyway :)
