i'm inclined to agreespeaking from experience, my ex had a 5 year old son who was exactly the way chloe here is described. i tried to encourage the boy to behave appropriately, as my own sprogs managed to, without success. all my efforts were ruined the moment his dad walked in. if i brought attention to anything bad the kid did, his dad just looked at me in disgust and would say 'how dare you tell me or MY SON what to do?'. my kids and i were second class citizens in our home.
after 3 years we split up and i got my self respect back.
i hope you can resolve your situation with more success than i did!
