@EnzymeHaving looked it up in my computer dictionary, it appears to be OK.
But it's a Mac, so it has a US dictionary. Looking up the Oxford English dictionary online:
fit - verb (fitted (US also fit), fitting)
So "fit" as the past tense is indeed American.
