There's saving money, and there's being tight: saving money at the expense of other people, or simply for the miserly hell of it.

Tell us about measures that go beyond simple belt tightening into the realms of Mr Scrooge.

think yourself lucky you don't get on buses in Birmingham - none of them give change and you can't even get a note to cash in at their offices like in the OP.

Hence on the odd occasion I do get the bus, I've taken to counting out most of my fare in coppers or 5ps. Effectively being a bit of a tightwad, but when I think of all the times they've made profit out of me because I've paid more than the exact fare then I'd say we're about even.
