You shouldthink yourself lucky you don't get on buses in Birmingham - none of them give change and you can't even get a note to cash in at their offices like in the OP.
Hence on the odd occasion I do get the bus, I've taken to counting out most of my fare in coppers or 5ps. Effectively being a bit of a tightwad, but when I think of all the times they've made profit out of me because I've paid more than the exact fare then I'd say we're about even.
