I lived in the People's Republic of California for too many years. Once in San Francisco I reeled drunkenly out of a restaurant in North Beach carrying left over pizza in a box and two bottles of wine in my belly. Feeling well with the world I decided to donate the pizza to a raggedy tramp sitting by the gutter.
LHC then wanders down the road, feeling his good deed for the day has been done. Turning the corner I looked back to see him looking in the box, turning his nose up and tipping the lot into the bin. Good feelings evaporated in an instant. I suppose it wasn't what he wanted - perhaps extra cheese would have made it more palatable?
Or was it money for drugs and booze he wanted?
