A friend of mine's profoundly autistic 18 year old son..is in residential care and can't even speak, never mind read or write. They know this - he has been the same all of his life and, sadly, will never improve.
ATOS have demanded he fill in an assessment form to decide whether he is eligible for benefits. His mum has ended up having to fill it in for him. All it serves to do is stir up the grief of having a child whose life is so limited.
