I think they missed a great opportunity there.Had it been me, I would have made the aliens susceptible to alcohol, not water. Then I would have made Mel Gibson's character a drunk who was mourning his wife, and who was in the habit of leaving glasses with melted ice and a little booze in them everywhere, as well as bottles of whiskey or something. Then when the big scene at the end came, he would have not only been defeating the aliens, but his own addiction as well.
