Yes, I have heard that Sky charge you a callout fee, whereas I know NTL do it free.
NTL replaced my box 2 days ago because it kept freezing randomly (the picture was fine but the box and remote wouldn't work). This new one not only has the same problem, but is also emitting a nasty buzz which I can only put down to a wiring problem. Their answer? 'Leave it a few days and it might fix itself'. Well, that or I'll burn to death in an electrical fire...
