  Chromecast

The device we most enjoyed this Christmas was
plugging a Chromecast into our TV. Dirt-cheap -
about £30 - and it lets you stream whatever is
in your browser to your TV. YouTube, Vimeo, or
any of those AWFUL sites with sex on them which
we never look at. Best of all is the ability to
create YouTube playlists, so you can sit there
queueing up loads of shitty old pop videos or,
sad fucks that we are, films of people playing
  computer games from the 1980s.

: WHAT B3TA PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MAKING THIS WEEK
  Other than 'DIY eggnog'

  >> Father Jack vs Katie Hopkins <<
HSDriver writes, "I have a similar reaction
  whenever she's on the TV."

  >> Bang goes the 'grow up' New Year's resolution <<
CCC is still making local papers print nonsense.
  Huzzah.

  >> The Internet bought me a cuddly dinosaur <<
Stevierar writes "I dared to venture to Reddit
and they bought me a cuddly dinosaur. It was
all a bit fast and confusing. There was even a
KickStarter at one point, until it was shut
  down.

"I've written it up and tried really really
hard to not sound like a weirdo but it just
  wasn't possible. Contains this terrible
combination of a car journey and a dance
version of the Peppa Pig theme tune."

: SITES IN BRIEF
Stuff we like that wasn't made by our mates

  * 7 visionary women behind electronic music - It
wasn't just Vince Cable of Erasure you know.
http://goo.gl/EkMy21

  * A clock that tells the time using a hex colour
code. Next week? A clock that uses time data as
latitude / longitude coordinates and claims the
  time is 'Calcutta'.
http://whatcolourisit.scn9a.org/

  * Excellent advice from Yahoo how to back up
emails - next week they'll be suggesting copying
  thumbdrives by photocopying them.
http://www.b3ta.com/links/1258343/

  * Let's do a Kickstarter and buy Kate Bush's
house together. Only £7.5k each & 365 of us can
spend 6 nights there a year - although thinking
about it, we might need to raise double that,
so we have an investment sum we can use to pay
for a manager and maintain upkeep. Still, WHO'S
  IN?
http://goo.gl/F2YwUd

  * It's the word "unwittingly" that adds so much
to this movie tagline - although, to be fair, as
ridiculous as this film sounds, military
dolphins ARE a thing. If you see any other great
taglines, make sure you tell us.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_of_the_Dolphi...

  * The abandoned Silverdome Stadium outside
Detroit: opened in the 70s and once host to the
Pope, Elvis, NBA finals, Led Zepplin (tho not
on the same day). It's now, like most stuff in
  that city, utterly fucked.
http://goo.gl/TUqpf2

-------------------------------------------------

: VIDEO SCHMIDEO
Like YouTube but not always on YouTube

  * Old Folks Enjoying Kraftwerk - although, to be
fair, the band formed in 1970 so, if you were 20
when you started listening to them, you'd be 65
  now.
http://goo.gl/wFmLvq

  * One Day In The Life Of Television - a
documentary that was broadcast on ITV on 1st
November 1989 and filmed by over fifty crews
exactly one year earlier. Long but fascinating
and worth watching to hear Anne Diamond being
called a scab as she crosses a picket line.
http://youtu.be/NU8YMn5wLZc

  * Kevin Smith talking about Prince for 30
minutes is better than ANY of the films he's
  made.
https://www.youtube.com/watch

  * Nik Kershaw the drugs narc - warning kids
about the dangers of iffy substances whilst
hanging out with the Filth. *Smashes 7" copy of
  The Riddle*
https://www.youtube.com/watch

  * Is this the world's biggest firework? We're
too crap to bother finding out, but there's no
  question it's exciting.
http://www.b3ta.com/links/have_we_had_the_massive_...

  * Who was the first presenter of Top Gear?
Angela Ripon, in 1977, and it was only shown in
the Midlands. Some of the YouTube comments are
gold: "THIS IS NOT YOUR SUCCESS, WOMAN!"

: STAR IN NEXT WEEK'S ISSUE

Make something cool and tell us about it. If
you are in it then people will see your stuff.

Things we'd really like to see:

  * Game idea: Realistic Monopoly. You can't
afford to buy any property and you go round in
  circles until you die.

  * Facebook and Twitter to be replaced by non
profit workers' collective which doesn't fuck
you over by making you buy ads.

  * A magic button that makes exercise appealing
  after Christmas lethargy.

Send contributions via the mail form.

BTW: If you've sent something in that hasn't
been featured then don't be put off - we look
  at everything you send us.

This issue was written by Rob Manuel with David
Stevenson. Stuff sent in by RompaStompa,
  tubaman, sinisterduck, dyllon, fred zeppelin,
Flobbit & HappyToast. Image challenge by Fraser
Lewry. Mike Trinder is QOTW bloke. Some say
there's more computing power in your phone than
what got us to the moon. However, the main thing
that got us to the moon was a bloody great
  big rocket.

  TOP TIP:
Middle-aged men: make people think that you've
just been to the toilet, by using a cotton bud
to dab a drop or water onto the front of your
  trousers... (NoStrings)
