Writing it to the man
[Long time reader, first time poster]
Last November, mates of mine who have kept sticking it to the Man long after I gave up trying, hosted a gig in the basement of a building they had squatted. They were using the building as a social centre with a library of donated books, a cafe operating on a donations basis. From time to time they would get evicted from one building and would just set up in another (with the previous building always returning to disuse).
They're still at it and I wish them well (and even more wish I shared their optimism and determination).
This is a picture of the facilities.

Gas baloons
Our chemistry teacher had a stunt for getting the class to pay attention. He would fill up a balloon from a lab gas tap, tie the balloon and attach a string, then set light to the string which would burn down to the balloon resulting in a small explosion.
Once this went wrong and instead of an explosion, the balloon became a small, ungainly rocket which flew round the classroom flame-grilling everything it passed.
On another occasion some German exchange students were in the class so Mr S did his party piece. Then he said
"It's a bit like that airship, the... the... "
--"Hindenburg" I helpfully supplied.
All the German exchange students walked out.

In History at school..
Mr Kendrick threatened the whole class with lunchtime detention, adding "It's not bother for me, I shall be here anyway"
I replied "Why? Won't they let you in the staff room?"
I was sat at the front, everyone in earshot laughed and there was no more talk of detentions - not even for me!
