# shirly speed camera's shouldn't bother you
unless, of course, you're speeding *gasp*

(but still woo to the pic.)

# indeed
I think most on this board agree they're required, if it stops people from speeding

isn't speeding a crime too
(, Tue 20 Jul 2004, 13:06, archived)
# seems to be a load of crimes that people don't consider to be crimes
to wit: downloading mp3s etc, also you can't drive anywhere without seeing a good half of other road users falmbouantly breaking driving rules
i could go on, but i cant be bothered

# Can't remember the last time
an mp3 ran someone over, though...
(, Tue 20 Jul 2004, 13:11, archived)
# downloading MP3's don't kill people though.
well, maybe the fatcats' bank balance.

# yes but downloading mp3s is 87% less likely to cause
a fatal collision.

But for that unlucky 13%, they're basically done for. DAMN YOU MP3S!

# tremendous mindpiss there
In answer to the post below, there is one adavntage to cameras versus police on duty.

A camera catches someone speeding, they get done, it's automatic. A cop catches a speeder, they have to speed after them (I'm avoiding a "The bus that couldn't slow down" gag here), risking more road users, and every once in a while, someone doesn't want to stop, so you get a chase. It's a lot of risk to life and limb for the cops and the other roadusers, whereas the camera is safer, and doesn't result in subjectove argument as much.

But yes, many of them are idotically and cynically placed, which should be a crime in itself.

I saw recently, between punchestown and dublin, a neat idea - apparently they're common, but since I rarely drive I had no idea, basically in a built up area with kids there's a speed limit sign, with a built in radar gun. Not charging anyone, not run by the police. Just getting your speed and relaying it back to you, so you can see how much you're still above said limit (30 mph there I think it was). Brilliant, as it was coming off of a faster stretch of road.

# yeah
there are three near me. They just go "slow down" at you if you are even 1mph over the limit. you get no speeding there cos it's like a big sign that says "I'm a cock" pointing at your car. it's ideal :). But they are, like you said, by a school.

# no
*stays calm*

The problem is that we had a way of stopping people speeding before. it was called the police. Now, since cameras are static, people speed everywhere except 100 yards every 5 miles. And rather than reading the road situation and judging on that, people judge their speed by signs and cameras. In some places, speed limits are too high, and in some, they are too low. and most cameras are sighted where the limit could safely be raised, which is why so many people are caught. Put them outside schools and in residential streets if the police really can't afford manpower any more, but they have no place anywhere else.

# point taken.
but the fact is, there are speed limits for a reason.

the speading doesn't bother me so much, it's the people that moan when they get cought hat do.
(, Tue 20 Jul 2004, 13:13, archived)
# I agree on moaning entirely AFTER being caught
you have broken a law after all.

but speed cameras in inappropriate areas is akin to putting breathalysers in pubs (since it is against the law to be intoxicated in a public house, and who dosen't do that?) and then fining you for it. It's a revenue generator and nothing else. Also, becuase there are so few police on the roads now they don't nick people for other offences (tailgating, undertaking, I could go on) that roads are becoming more dangerous. The number of road deaths fell every year (well for about the last 10 anyway) until cameras were widely introduced, and then it started rising .... and stats, of course, never lie ;)

# I would rather see the police dealing with more serious offenses,
and leave speed cameras to deal with brainless idiots.
(, Tue 20 Jul 2004, 13:15, archived)
# but there has been a reduction in the number of traffic cops
of around 11% and cameras cant deal with pissed up people and stolen cars and cars going the wrong way down duel carridge ways and middle laners

# until they make
cool transformer robot speed cameras.
(, Tue 20 Jul 2004, 13:27, archived)
# I would not
my international drug cartel is going strong and one day i will buy you all! i say yes to speed cameras and no to your stinking police.
