# my grandad died last year (dalkeith)
he was well known in the freemasons circles as 'uncle davey'. he has his initials in the 'temple' roof.

and talk about weird handshakes at the funeral....its more of a 'grab the fingers not the palm' shake
(, Fri 1 Jul 2005, 19:24, archived)
# Jeepers!
quite an honour!

If you ever go to Kirkwall go to the lodge there, they have a masonic museum, that has some very, very strange stuff and a very impressive tracing board.

(, Fri 1 Jul 2005, 19:36, archived)
# it's not really that secret
the secrecy sort of started during world war one with fear of nazis invading, if you were a Freemason you would get sent to the chambers by them.

# I have heaps of family up there so I go quite regularly
they have a good wee bar there too, the only problem is if your not from orkney everyone keeps buying you drinks, usually quality whiskys, the last time I was there I took the Duchess in and we couldn't remember much of the evening or getting home.
