When it had a plot and some slapstick elements instead of being 90% garbage filler material
filler material written by people who seem to believe that substituting humour for a really stupid tangent usually involving a celebrity is a good idea it did indeed rock.

If you were the head of Fox network, what would you cancel?
Family Guy or Futurama.
Me: Futurama

Me: Futurama
I'd hang myself actually.
Bunch of propaganda pushing, mediocre humour loving cnuts.
I find that with Fox aminations the 'good' ones have a fairly strong start and go on that way for a season or two before they get hijacked and turned into deliberately generic shows. Things like the Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad... they all turned into humourless mush that pretends to be outrageous without ever offending anyone, tell jokes that are neither funny nor particularly awful and have no real plot or character development. I'd go as far as to say it's deliberate. They become programs you remember as being funny once that have become so flat and featureless you'll turn them on in the background without even thinking or watch all the way through before you realise you didn't laugh once.

You have to admire
his determination.
And his brains, but only for their copiousness.
Woo!
