I think two groups of people
have managed to modify the hardware to run linux on it. There's another challenge still on (sponsored by the bloke behind Lindows I think) to get linux running on an unmodifed X box, which is apparently considerably harder

I think the main benefit of that project, and the (successful) dreamcast ones was that gmaes consoles are sold at a loss, so if there's a way to use them as PC, it could be a dead cheap way to get one. But I think a lot of it it just that they like that kind of challenge and want to annoy microsoft!
