Pour Dave le Hat:

Okay, so Friday I was offered the opportunity to take a trip down the Pearl River by night, it's supposed to be a beautiful sight...plus I really didn't have that much else to do. While we were on there I had a beer and my collegue went to buy a brandy, only there was a misunderstanding and because of the language barrier and the unexpected cheap price he ended up buying a bottle rather than glass! needless to say he offered this around having little to no chance of finishing it himself and I, having never had brandy before, dutifully took up the challenge of one more new experience and had what was probably a generous double measure myself. Fine. We got off the boat and asked to be dropped off in town so we could 'have one for the road' as it were, myself and my collegue had another couple of swigs of the brandy on the way, though probably not more than another measure in my case because although I can drink quite alot I do tend to take it steady generally. Fine. We got to the bar and got a pint in, I was starting to feel more intoxicated than I usually would at this point assuming it had been another spirit such as vodka I had consumed so i got some chips to soak up a bit of the alcohol, and nursed my pint rather than keeping up with the others. Fine. We then went on to another bar to meet up with some other friends and by this point I was noticing that I really didn't seem to be coping with the alcohol like I usually did so when another pint was put in front of me I had a little sip for politeness and went and got myself some water instead. For the next few hours I had nothing more than the occasional sip from the first beer and plenty of water, and yet...I STILL got more and more intoxicated. More so than I usually would on that amount of alcohol, the water really was not helping at all and I became so drunk that I did something REALLY stupid...I ordered a Long-Island Ice Tea.

*groan*

Yup, that did it for me, I realised just how bad I was as the tea did it's stuff and dutifully headed home, blind drunk and strangely getting worse. By the time I got back to my room I couldn't even stand, I was sick multiple times and couldn't even make it to the bathroom with it. Never since the first time I ever drank too much have I been that bad, but 'better out than in' I thought, got it out my system, grabbed some more water and collapsed into bed knowing that I was best just to sleep it off. But the story does not end there.

You see normally i'm not too bad the next day; because I usually pace myself, because i'm in the habit of drinking plenty of water when i'm out, and perhaps because i've still got youth on my side (who knows) i usually have a bit of a 'delicate' head the next morning and that's about it. But yesterday? wow, so so different.

I woke up, realised I felt sick, grabbed a milkshake (milk settles my stomach usually) puked it up. Phew, must of had something leftover from last night, right? Grabbed some water, puked it up. Waited a while for my stomach to settle a bit, puked again. Realised i'd have to rehydrate somehow, sipped water...you guessed it, puked THAT up. Basically I spent yesterday on a constant cycle of being sick, feeling a bit better, gradually getting worse and being sick again all the while barely daring to move because it set me off again. By early evening I had realised that it wasn't just alcohol getting out my system, something was seriously irritating my stomach and wouldn't come out/ go away, I physically ached from head to toe and my chest was sore from the effort of bringing my stomach contents up so violently and so often. It really was not pleasant- I don't know if you're picking up on this, it wasn't.

Thankfully in my half-aware state I still managed to grab onto the single most useful thing I could have done- I found half a little bottle of a really sugary peach juice drink I hadn't finished the day before and decided to see if I could fool my body into not realising I was putting anything in my stomach by taking tiny tiny little sips regularly spaced out. Thank God, I managed to keep that down and got a little bit of much needed energy back through the hydration and excessive sugar, allowing me to get both a bit more water and finally another milkshake down before I went to bed. Well i wasn't my best today but i'm certainly over the worst.

The crowning point to this rather unpleasant story? Guess what my mum said when I told her about my adverse reaction to few drinks but supposed bad reaction to mixing of spirits with beer?

'Oh yes, Brandy, you shouldn't drink that, it's distilled sugar and you, myself and your aunts can't have that. Possibly we're allergic or it could be the non-diabetic hypoglycemia you've almost certainly inherited from us'

Didn't know I had that. Do now.

Never EVER drinking brandy again.
