i left them as squares to give the impression of zoomed in pictures of the cockpit screens (which are square-ish and really effing small).

192kb is just fine, you're good up to around 250kb
You might wish to invest in a cheap copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 which has untagged animations, and nice tools too.
