Free and takes up next to no space, also, it will open pretty much any media file you like :)

so can I convert it using VLC to other formats iMovie might play ball with?
(, Thu 7 May 2009, 19:59, archived)
# it works as a converter but sometimes it's a bit dodgy.
otherwise you can try to use ffmpeg directly, if you only want to change format

# handbrake to convert
nice easy use wrapper for the osx port of mencoder (mplayers converter) - converts to most formats

mplayer for osx also plays most formats back ... funnily O_o

vlc works well with perion & flipformac codecs, but also quicktime player does the job if you've a high end mac otherwise you have to wait ages for it to pre render

osx mplayer (for me) works best with mkv's
