Well, it's a start.

Nice animation
Crap prints though - that's what you get for using a hobby machine.

I think the movement is more convincing that any CGI animal I've seen - maybe the actual physical weight helps.

perhaps if they showed the actual 3d animation you'd see it was identical
and a massive waste of time

It pleases me that I'm not the only cynic thinking the same thing.

Right, I understand now - and as for the waste of (single-use) plastic, shockingly pointless.

Still cool though
A mate of mine operates a 3D printer at his work. He printed me off a tiny human jawbone.

That's gorgeous - lots of lines, but then there used to be lots of visible pixels in CG stuff. Early days.

His company only use 3D printing for mould support I think
He works with carbon fibre. So aesthetics aren't too important.

Being a fan of your work, I would take note of any reservations you have about 3D printing.
Yeah I know, get a room an' all that

nowt wrong with 3d printing, very exciting times, looking forward to it being affordable and not all layered looking
my problem was with the animation.
Decent enough 3d animation rendered on a computer
they then printed each frame
took photos
put those photos back in to the computer
and made an animation, like they already had.
Fucking waste of time, effort and resources. Should have turned it in to a zoetrope like the Ghibli/Pixar ones, at least that would be a tangible animation piece.
*edit - excuse the outburst, it's been a very long day that probably won't finish for a good 6 hours

Aye, seems reasonable.
From what little I know about animation.

I agree with you EXCEPT
i have seen a similar thing at Disney World, but instead of them being used for a stop motion animation, the they were used for a large 3 dimensional zoetrope.

I must have missed the link which sparked that rant
but I'm totally there with you.
The christmas John Lewis advert set me off ranting about wastes of time when I learned they had cut out the animated characters instead of comping them into the landscape.
It smacked of being done just so they had an interesting behind-the-scenes video

Certainly
Possible they didn't even do it that way, except a few frames for behind-the-scenes. There's a lot of that sort of shit on Kickstarter. The video tells a heartwarming background story of the family business manufacturer "we searched for" but then when the money rolls in it actually goes to fund mass-production of the same old shit you can buy elsewhere.
