This is a normal post nowt wrong with 3d printing, very exciting times, looking forward to it being affordable and not all layered looking
my problem was with the animation.
Decent enough 3d animation rendered on a computer
they then printed each frame
took photos
put those photos back in to the computer
and made an animation, like they already had.

Fucking waste of time, effort and resources. Should have turned it in to a zoetrope like the Ghibli/Pixar ones, at least that would be a tangible animation piece.
*edit - excuse the outburst, it's been a very long day that probably won't finish for a good 6 hours

This is a normal post I agree with you EXCEPT
i have seen a similar thing at Disney World, but instead of them being used for a stop motion animation, the they were used for a large 3 dimensional zoetrope.

This is a normal post I must have missed the link which sparked that rant
but I'm totally there with you.

The christmas John Lewis advert set me off ranting about wastes of time when I learned they had cut out the animated characters instead of comping them into the landscape.
It smacked of being done just so they had an interesting behind-the-scenes video

Possible they didn't even do it that way, except a few frames for behind-the-scenes. There's a lot of that sort of shit on Kickstarter. The video tells a heartwarming background story of the family business manufacturer "we searched for" but then when the money rolls in it actually goes to fund mass-production of the same old shit you can buy elsewhere.

Yeah, John Lewis could have been good if they'd photographed it at a 3/4 view that actually showed it was cut out wood. But instead they chose to make the whole endeavour pointless and expensive.
