UR Mark Kermode AICMFP!
I don't get how that guy can praise something like Disney High-School Musical on the grounds that although it's corny, it does what it sets out to do. But then he watches a film that might as well be called The Giant Robots Who Blow Stuff Up and whine, "oh, it's all too reliant on special effects and explosions". Well, duh. Yes, Pearl Harbor was shit, but that first live-action Transformers movie did everything it needed to do for the fans and did it brilliantly.

At a guess
It'll be because the girls in High School Musical aren't reduced to the status of teenage boy's masturbation aid.
Transformers makes the Carry On films look progressive in their attitude towards women.

No, they just use 18-24 year old boys to portray 12-16 year olds
To set unrealistic ideals in the target audience.
While the girls keep their clothes on for the film but strip off for magazine shoots between takes.
