I dont think it's even seen as 'bad' journalism these days

To be fair, that's always happened.
The precursor to newspapers was pamphlets, polemical in the extreme. Only difference now is bidniz.
Journalists were always one of the lowest professions; that they have any status at all is down to investigative reporting, I suppose.

you're probably spot on
I dont remember the agenda leaking into the content quite so blatantly a few years ago. Seemed to be a more defined line between 'editorial' and 'news'
