How many Things were there? I thought there was only one at a time, but if it was on the helicopter that crashed behind the mountain how did it get back to the base when it can't survive out it the cold.

This is a normal post I've always read it as every single cell is an aspect of the Thing.
Chop it into five pieces and each bit will get up and act individually, but working towards a single goal. Any blood it leaves behind will actively seek a new target/safety, and if it wanks on your bed, the spunk will chase you.

This is a normal post I felt the prequel tried too hard to connect all the nuggets of information you already had about the Norwegian camp.
And, as you say, the concealing of almost all of the practical FX seemed like a complete lack of faith in their target audience.
