This is a question Cheap Tat

OneEyedMonster remindes us about the crap you can buy in pound shops: "Batteries that lasted about an hour and then died. A screwdriver with a loose handle so I couldn't turn the damn screw, and a tape measure which wasn't at all accurate."

Similarly, my neighbour bought a lawnmower from Argos that was so cheap the wheels didn't go round, it sort of skidded over the grass whilst gently back-combing it.

What's the cheapest, most useless crap you've bought?

Another anti-answer
I had a "separates" Hifi system in the loft for the last couple of years. When I bought it was top-notch, 5 stars in What Hi-Fi, over £150 for each bit.

But that was a long time ago. I checked Ebay and each bit was only fetching about £10 and nobody wanted it, so I decided to take it to Merton recycling center. They have a bit for electrical equipment, where the sign says they "repair and reuse" equipment.

So I opened the boot and proudly showed the man there what I had brought. "Its in new condition as you can see!" I said. "You won't even need to fix it, you can keep it yourself if you like!".

"Thanks very much!" said the man, as he took the CD player, amplifier, radio and speakers out of the boot one by one, and threw them as hard as he could into a pile, so that his mate could take a running jump and crush the equipment underfoot.

I don't know what I expected them to do with it, I suppose it was patronising to expect them to want the stuff, but as I drove away I hadn't felt so depressed in months.

You'll hate this
My mate had a 'stack' that was largely unused and recently took it into a 'cash converter' pawn shop where he received the princely sum of £60 for it. Much better than a skip-rat jumping on it eh?

I've been considering disposing of my separates too as I moved 18 months ago and still haven't even re-connected them. I think I'll follow my mate's example rather than yours!

.
*!.@ I didn't even think of that, I'm too posh these days for cash converters.

Snap!
I've never even been into a branch. My mate tells me it was pretty grim, with 'regulars' hocking their kids playstations and stuff, still better £60 than depression and resentment of skip-rats though eh?

I used to work on a rubbish dump
You get so much good stuff you stop caring. Antique furniture, working big screen tv's, full golf sets, bose stereo equipment etc that you just give up trying to save it.

If they are anything like me their homes will have surround sound systems , massive telly's, and leather furniture that was out of date*

To them that stereo was tat. Also you cant give them away as they haven't been electrically tested for safety; read you could get sued if they burn someones house down.

besides its all mp3 now.

*every time there was a new sale on at dfs/bhs/nhs etc some fuckers would replace all their furniture before driving all the 3 piece suites they got in last years sales to the dump.
