Sometimes, just sometimes, old people say something worth listening to. Ok, so it's like picking the needle out of a whole haystack of mis-remembered war stories, but those gems should be celebrated.
Tell us something worthwhile an old-type person has told you.
Note, we're leaving the definition of old up to you, you smooth-skinned youngsters.

Pretty much universally sucked. People being older than me does not make them wiser.
These pearls, however, are useful and many are direct quotes.
Go to university close enough that you can get home if you need to but not close enough that parent can 'drop in'.
Remember that you are good enough as you are, just precisely as you are - if other people don't like it, that says something about them, not you.
Wear sunscreen. Especially on the exposed parts of lady bumps.
Learn about what you like, trust that you will find other people who know the rest. (especially applies to geeky stuff)
DO NOT start smoking.
Never pass up an opportunity to pee.
Don't regret. You made those choices with the best information you had at the time and regret is energy wasted on things you can't change.
Trust yourself and your feelings.
Use the long drop loos at Glastonbury.
Avoid tequila.
Laugh as often as you can.
Be not afraid of your beliefs and your ability and right to express them.
Take your damn shoes off and feel some grass under your feet.
Learn to ride a bike.
There will be more, I'm sure, but to finish, and the one I like the most and has made the most difference to me of late...
Never, ever, forget to play. What's the worst that can happen?
.

I can vouch for the avoidance of this. It's the devil's piss. No good can come from drinking it!

I wondered about how to phrase that one, though. I think that people are all, at birth, good enough. I think people are taught to think they are not and I think that sucks. I think everyone *is* good enough and that a lot of the fuckedupness in the world comes from people thinking they aren't good enough, and therefore asserting power over others needlessly. If they felt ok about themselves, they wouldnl't have to do that.

When I was a kid we got taken on a school trip to Mountfitchet Castle.
They showed us a barrel that had spikes on the inside of it. They used to roll you down the hill in the barrel. If you lived, you were a witch. If you died, you were innocent.
Sounds like someone didn't think that through...
_______
"Er... My lord?"
"Yes, serf?"
"Well, it's about the spiky barrel..."
"Yes?"
"It's just that... You know... The Goodwives we roll in it aren't likely to live, are they?"
"No."
"So, what we're saying is, er, that even the guilty may die?"
"Yes."
"Isn't that bad?"
"It's only bad if there's no such thing as witchcraft, silly servant!"

Once when I was in Portland, Oregon, USA, I ended up talking to a tramp while waiting for a bus. He smelled so badly that I had a distinct memory of the smell for months to come. Can't remember much about the conversation but he did mention he was a veteran of the Korean war.
Re B3ta patches:
If you look at people's profiles, you can get an RSS feed of their activity. You could just stick an ethernet cable up your bottom and then you'd have an ARSE feed.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 14:27, closed)
what's RSS all about please? My ignorance of it fits with point 4 in my list above, trust others to know stuff you don't.

so about 1000 to go I reckon.
Spakka, why would you want an RSS feed of what someone is doing? That just sounds rather stalkerific

it's not as elaborate as the last one I did when I lived in High Wycombe. I did a mahoosive cherry tree stencil across two walls. That was actually using a stencil as well so it was a fucking nightmare leaving bits to dry and then going over them again. I'm doing this free hand so it's a lot easier.
I've also pinched the bench from the kitchen as it never gets used and there's another one round the other side of the table if anyone does want to use it so I can reach the top bits. Think I'll keep it so I have something to put my tv and stuff on once I'm finished as I'm sure it's not good to have them all stacked up on top of each other.

Basically, it's a means of having a live update to stuff that happens on the web (eg. blog entries). On Firefox, you can subscribe to a Live bookmark (an RSS feed) and it will show you if something's been updated without having to keep pressing F5. Can't be RSS'd to come up with a better explanation right now, but check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS
@becks
Nice one. I look forward to seeing the wall. Must take a lot of patience to do that many leaves.
Re stalkerific: It does seem stalkerific a bit, but it saves your F5 key from wear. When I started using the 'friends' facility, it did feel a bit stalkerific at first.

"Remember that you are good enough as you are, just precisely as you are - if other people don't like it, that says something about them, not you."
This really hits home with me. I have an unorthodox personality and some people just can't seem to make the effort to get their heads round it if I want to be myself. I now deal with this by just messing with their heads for the fun of it.

I reckon I'm gonna stay online all day, more erratically between, um, half four and half 8i'dguess. Need to do some laundry and cleaning and things. And prepare for my last day at work - woohoo!

Last time I was that drunk, I woke up in a house full of strange Polish people. I don't speak any Polish, but one disconcerting thing I heard was the guy I was out with mention the name of the beer I was drinking and everyone else burst out laughing.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 16:14, closed)
was the best thing you won a cuddly toy?
Spakka - there's a polish beer that makes me laugh. No idea how to say it but it's written Okocim... it'd make me laugh regardless of drunk people in the room.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 16:21, closed)
'Okocim' makes me want to repeat the name in a silly high-pitched voice and put stress on the final sylable.
'Tyskie' makes me want to sing songs about it.
The beer that put me over the edge that night was 'Żywiec Porter'. I asked for one at the bar, and I thought the barman was being kind when he got me a second. Turns out that in Poland, the 'two pints of Żywiec Porter on one night' is a local drinking-challenge.

is not a problem per se, just that it takes a while to load. I agree we don't want to have parallel chats, as that gets confusing, but maybe we could agree on a maximum thread length before one of us posts something marginally on topic and we all go and chat there.
It's sort of happening like that anyway, as someone (can't remember who, but could be mistaspakkaman) is kindly putting 'chat continues here' links at the end of threads.
Maybe I'm just getting old!

Re organising uni accomodation and breakfast: Keep me informed...
Do you think it's time we organized the trains? My plans on getting there are still up in the air, but we could take a train back to London on Sunday afternoon.
Re drinks - if I have baileys, should be OK as long as nobody squirts lime-juice into my mouth.
PS. I think I might be able to make it to the September Essex beer festival afterall, but this may involve some cycling to save cash. I probably won't decide for sure until after the July bash.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 21:14, closed)
I think we could book ourselves onto one on Sunday now, couldn't we? I plan to buy two single tickets, so I'm happy to do that and sort out my Saturday one separately.
Which would you prefer, to Waterloo (cheaper) or to Paddington (quicker)?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 21:18, closed)
the slower train would be better. Cheaper is just an added bonus.
What's everyone else doing about gettign back to London / Southhampton?
BTW: If we book the tickets online, doesn't that mean we have reserved seats and there's no guarantee we'll be sat close to eachother?
EDIT: Is it more expensive if I get the return one soon and the outbound one later?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 21:20, closed)
but not always.
If we have reserved seating, we don't *have* to sit in those seats - we can sit where seats are not reserved, so that's OK.
The Trainline is offering tickets at £17 on the 13.22 and £22 on the 15.24. The one in between those two we'd have to make two changes on.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 21:25, closed)

(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 21:33, closed)
and I'll fit with that if I can. Want to check with other travellers too before making any commitments. But cheap is going to be my main deciding factor.
And I will not be drinking Baileys, lime or no lime. Don't do dairy so I'm safe from the prospect of curdling.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 21:34, closed)
and tell everyone what we're doing. Do you want to? Which train would you prefer? I like the idea of not being back too late (school night, cat to feed etc.), but also have a fear that we might not want to get up too early...
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 21:38, closed)
Tricky that.
If we want to have a lie-in, hangover, vomit-cleaning and breakfast, would that make 13.22 too early? Or is arriving in London at 18:58 too late? I'd choose the 15:24 train, but if everyone else wants the 13:22 train, I'll go with that.
By the way, are we going from Exeter Central or Exeter St. Davids? The Waterloo train stops at both.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 21:47, closed)
much better for the uni at least.
i'm going to want to prolong my visit for as much time as i can, so won't be leaving early, so will probably travel separately from you guys

same price and it won't matter if we're closer to central for breakfast as we can just get on there instead.
I'm fine with the 15.20 train from ESD - I can't go back later than that because my flatmate's away and I have to feed the cat (who I will abandon for the weekend!).

*Eyes Ancrenne suspiciously*
Edit: Yeah I've seen Sigur Ros a few times, they're pretty awesome

How was it for you clendrix?
@ancranne
OI! You're supposed to have stopped smoking.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 22:36, closed)
which is why it's best to make sure there are no cigarettes round me, I'm in the 'i'm glad to have stopped but fuck it if there were any here I'd chain the lot of em' sort of place.
It'll pass in thirty, forty years, so I'm told.

despite all the heckling.
Just listening to Sigur Ros now - like it!

Your sig is a bit disturbing. Where in London are you?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 22:41, closed)
they've been around ages... I am sooooo out of touch. They're lovely though, really interesting.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 22:42, closed)
Best not to let the heckling distract you. Had to create an account and realise that they don't send tickets abroad so am sending them to a friend in London.
@ancrenne
Re out of touch: I too don't pay much attention to the charts. In fact, I haven't been doing so since early 2004.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 22:47, closed)
is directly related to Spak's. It relates to a long conversation higher up this thread about who gets to puke and who gets to mop. There seems to be a buddy system for B3tans on bashes!
Edit: I'm in Tottenham.

Lovely to see you! Hows things in the land of girders?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 22:55, closed)
totally missed that. In my world, he who pukes mops. He who doesn't puke laughs. I'm nice like that.
Edit: Hi PoD

Things are good in girder land. Wet, and windy, but good. Just been packing for my trip to Ireland tomorrow, hoorah!!
How are the leaves going Becky? And when did you finally get up 'crenne?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 22:59, closed)
I think it started with me cleaning up after Kaol. I could have left it but then I'd have been wandering round London with someone covered in their own stomach lining the next day...
Altruism, eh?
Um, I think i got up about 5ish, maybe? Not sure. I've done loads of tidying though, much needed, and got a load of tunes onto my hard drive.
Ireland y'say? Whatcha doing there?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 22:59, closed)
There's a picture of the finished article up there somewhere :)
Ooh Ireland. What for?

I've put it up on the calendar.

Playing at wedding receptions on Tuesday and Saturday. Who has a wedding on a Tuesday? And enjoying a bit of a holiday Wednesday to Friday, which will be nice.
I copied lots of video off my brothers hard drive earlier, so have lots to watch while travelling :)
edit - that's awesome, must have taken ages. I would have gone mad long before finishing it. Well, gone madder anyway.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:05, closed)
nice bit of a break and some work too. Is it meant to be blowing a gale there or is Ireland allowed some nice weather?
/only been to Ireland in the rain

Missed me?
*grins*
Work was rubbish, I'd lost the will to live about half way through.
And I sliced my finger open, and managed to get lime fresh juice in it. That was painful.
But now I'm baaaaack, woo!
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:10, closed)
I'm just glad the sodding thing's finished.
Ancrenne when's your last day at work?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:11, closed)
That it is meant to rain in N.Ireland all week. Hoorah.
Just as well I'm taking the mactop then, I'll try and get on the internet where I'm staying, which will be good.
And it's good, mixing work and play. Especially when work involves standing playing the bass.

TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
I have to go in for the morning then have 5.5days leave which takes me up to the end of my notice period at the end of June.
I'll have trouble sleeping tonight I think as I am so excited about not being there any more :) Even if I didn't get the starry dress finished :(
I'm going in in my hippiest of hippie clothes tomorrow I think.
EDIT - evening Kaol. Isn't that the third injury to that finger since Thursday now?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:14, closed)
And goodnight, my lovelies. I'm off to bed, but I'll come and find you all tomorrow.*

(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:16, closed)
I kind of am.
But that's more down to me being me.
Welcome to the World Of Kaol, first ride half price.
Gayer told me that I managed to smack my face into a wall on Thursday night...
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:17, closed)
Belmsford - I might (depending on a few things) be in touch re lifts for August but will have Big Girls Blouse with me as she's visiting from oop north. Cheers for the offer though :)
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:17, closed)
Finish the starry dress now. It'd so be worth it!
Evening Kaol, lemon juice in cuts is a bugger. As is surgical spirit
Night Clendrix
I've just quit smoking (again). I've got patches ready to put on tomorrow, so I'm really going to try this time.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:18, closed)
Put the patch on before bed and then don'e even have one tomorrow. It makes sense! Not a hope of finishing the dress though, far too much prep work to be done to get it neat.
Spakka..no idea! I'll see what the weather is doing at the time :)
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:20, closed)
Heaven.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:20, closed)
Stings pretty bad too. Plus it disguises the cut for a while, making it go a strange grey colour, even when washed.
That was a bad afternoon, that was.

PoD...eeeewwwww..plaster dust is a cunty cunty thing anyway...
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:22, closed)
and it made me stay awake all night, so don't really want that.
I'm going to bed now before cravings kick in and then can put the patch on as soon as I get out the shower tomorrow morning.

Good luck with the quitting.
I got the dust in it when cutting plasterboard for a friends loft. Managed to cut the leg of my trousers open too, and it was a little close to the crotch for comfort.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:26, closed)
What were you cutting it with to nearly slice your penis off?
EDIT: G'night sleeping people.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:27, closed)
A sharp one at that. And it slipped out of the plasterboard, and moved rather quickly towards my leg.
Didn't draw any blood luckily.
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:29, closed)
The thought of a really sharp knife slicing someone does funny things to me.
I don't mean that in a "trying to be creepy" way.

EDIT - Kaol - did you lend PoD the de-cocking shears?
(, Sun 22 Jun 2008, 23:33, closed)
It wasn't all that much fun. I was really quite terrified. It could have gone very badly.
But it didn't, so I just started cutting again.

As regards drinking, I'm on the Red Diesel tonight.
Work in the morning, so I'm relying on residual alcohol content getting me through to lunchtime.

There's no-one to clean you up tonight you know....
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:01, closed)
Has to be done.
I mean... I couldn't drink at work, as if I had a crash on the way home in a car I'm not insured on, that I'd "borrowed", whilst drunk, things would be bad.
There're all kinds of places I couldn't visit if I was in prison.

The way you explain it, it *sounds* logical but, you know...
*shakes head*

*offers drink*
If you tried it, you'd understand.
Or did you try some on Thursday? I can't remember.
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:14, closed)
It was not at all unpleasant.
I just (nowadays, most of the time) prefer my alcohol to tickle me gently rather than smack me repeatedly about the head with a shovel.
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:20, closed)
The one you tried did have a quarter of a bottle of vodka in it...

maybe that's why it tasted so good.
I think my life will always have times that I want to get completely annihilated. But they aren't as commonplace as before..
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:33, closed)
Nothing wrong with getting shit-faced and waking up in a park, covered in anti-climb paint and leaves.
It's when you do it too often that it becomes a problem.
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:36, closed)
That sounds like my sort of night out.
I think there's no bash yet in October and the leaves will be good then. The 'b3ta annihilation bash, only those with spare livers need apply'
I shall endeavour to not chip my teeth, tear open my face, or disappear to an unofficial after gig party with a band of notorious drug capacity.
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:43, closed)
but may end up doing it again at some point in the future.
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:43, closed)
I'll eat beforehand this time.
That'll give me a lot more capacity.
As long as I don't end up getting chased by gang-members again, it's fine.
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:46, closed)
I think we're getting to the point of us having a never-ending bash.
EDIT: Re forgetting to eat beforehand: That was the cause of the second-last time this happened.
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:50, closed)
have an october bash. And certainly not one designed for maximum drunkenness. I rip so many clothes when I'm pissed and adventuring that anti climb paint is the least of my worries.
I am so so so skint that I am going to have to start fortune telling or kidnapping or something equally nefariously money for old rope-y just as it is...
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:54, closed)
If I don't get a job soon, I'll have to rely on companies I interview at subsidising my travel. But done creatively, I may even be able to turn a profit this way (eg. if I have two interviews in the same town).
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 0:59, closed)
For the first time since I graduated.
I'm about to change jobs, and not have to pay rent anymore.
So, yep, it's time to buy a car, I think.
Then I can come to all the bashes, and buy you lovely skint people a drink.
(, Mon 23 Jun 2008, 1:02, closed)
I drink a lot of drinks... does that offer still stand?

Spakka - if I don't get some paid work soon, I'll be considering paying for bashes by taking a mortgage holiday. Seriously.
