Don't give upFrom a fellow student (chemistry) with dreams of making the world a better place, don't give up. You will get there if you are determined enough. There's no point looking at it and going "Oh I'm probably not going to get there so I won't even try" cos then you've lost before you've even started. And the recession won't last forever. Have a little faith.
