Waste of money
I once paid a small fortune to a solicitor in a legal case. She got lost on the way to court, turned up late with the wrong papers and started an argument with the judge, who told her to "shut up, for the love of God". A stunning investment.
Thanks to golddust for the suggestion

El Diablo
I bought this:
The chances of being able to use it without being thrown in the clink are slim to fuck-all.
EDIT : I live in Glasgow. Waving one of these around is liable to have you shot (by cops or criminals, makes no odds).

Sit on the cliffs and shoot seagulls.......
If you have no cliffs or seagulls, send it to me, and I'll sit on the cliff shooting seagulls.
Fucking rats with wings.

I got one of these
and while camping with the cubs discovered a discarded archery arrow
combine the two for hours of potentially life-threatening fun :)

i had the black widow as a kid
i can heartily reccommend putting two 2p pieces in it and firing. it usually whizzes off in an abstract abnd potentially inconvenient/deadly direction, but makes an amazing 'WHEEEEEEEEEEUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMBRRRRRRRRRRRRR' noise, for reasons that elude me.. true though.
i also fired archery arrows through mine. it was, to put it bluntly, absolutely fucking lethal.

Me and a mate set up some 5mm plywood at the bottom of the garden with various teachers from our school drawn on it
the arrow penetrated about 8" through it, and I could get it dead centre through one of their eyes
absolutely fucking lethal :D

Heh
I got shot by one of those as a kid, luckily the hay bail took most of the force out of it but I still have the slight dent in my skull and scar on my forehead. And the blood, Ooooo the blood.

A ha
Another rewind to my youth, I had a friend (now a responsible member of society in charge of large flying tubes in the sky filled with human cattle) who owned this particular device. We used to use it to fire ball bearings at objects very far away...lots of damage! Looking back the most amazing thing is that no one was killed....but then he had also developed forms of exploding compounds in his bedroom and used these for humorous effect by demolishing stuff. Crazy days those early nineties I tell you.

It's not illegal to hunt with a catapult.
It is if you use an arrow though.

I'd say
the chances of being able to use that thing without finding the propelent
lodged in the back of your hand would more of a concern.

Eh?
I've got a custom catty and the U is only 2" wide, never had a problem with it.

In all honesty
that had given me cause for concern, but with steel ball bearings and a steady hand, you'd have to be fairly cack-handed to hit yourself. The few times I have had a chance to use it, I've been able to hit the target dead on, so not as hard as it looks - given that I was pissed.

I had one of those and a Black Widow
and I used to make and shoot arrows with them
and I put a home-made arrow through my hand
and I spent a week in hospital.
Still have the scar. My only one. Catapults are anything but a waste of money though :)

Everyone wanted a Diablo, but most people had a Black Widow.

Was there a change to the law recently?
I seem to recall that there was no legislation regarding catapults at all. What does the law say now?

The law now states that yes, go on then, use a catapult but...
... you must under no circumstances attach high powered lasers to it, ok?

Considering it is still legal to buy an air rifle...
(though admittedly not to use it in public) I can't see a problem with shooting a catapult on private land.
On the other hand, using chavs as a target probably shifts it to 'offensive weapon' however much you may be doing a good deed.

Yeeeeesss
i've found that as it punches a very neat penny-sized hole through both sides of a beer tin, it's best not to aim at people or animals.

But air weapons have specific legislation.
Similar seems to apply to crossbows and just plain bows. I've probably not read carefully enough, but I don't recall any legislation referring to catapults.
