That'll be the JPEG artifactsif you'd converted it to around 8 colours or so and saved it as GIF or PNG, it would be smaller, but look pretty much the same.
I just converted it to a 6 colour PNG and its 60k, but the JPEG artifacts caused it to not look as good as it would have done with the original source image, and of course it would have been even smaller.
