You know more than you let onI wouldn't say knocking the USA is 'fashionable', they just happen to be the current big kids in the playground. Power and abuse of power has always been correlated, so naturally as the most powerful nation on the planet, they're guilty of the most offences.
I'm not sure what yard stick you'd use either to compare Washington's policies to previous empires, but it's also neither here-nor-there. We can't judge the past by present standards, nor vice-versa.
