Speaking of ideas...
Trying to find out if there's an easy way to combine stills with an existing gif - and if there's some easy way to add a couple of gifs to a similar pic. Fiddling with pasting frames from two gifs was...fiddly.
Oh and decent optimization other than reducing width/height? The BW vlc snaps caught some serious banding.

ah yes, photoshop isn't great for that.
dekionplexis gave me a key for a program called 'gif movie gear' that lets you blend gifs over each other with ease. i'm not sure if it only allows two keys, but you could send him a message and see.

also, instead of using vlc snaps, just download camstudio and capture youtube clips with that in avi format
then in photoshop go to file/import/video frames to layers...
all this providing you're using photoshop :)
