# 'win at any cost'
Still, can't argue with getting a replacement machine in such circumstances.

and similarly, I got a replacement hard drive from seagate in the same way.

edit: but that was in warranty, so it's not the same thing, so forget everything I said.

# I was gobsmacked.
I don't know if I caught one of their reps on a really good day or what, but straight after the initial phone conversation (where I said it was second hand - no bullshitting on my part, they just took the serial number and ID'd it from that) they emailed me a prepaid postage voucher to send it to them, and within 3 days I had a phone call from them saying "it's an old machine, we generally don't bother repairing them, so there's a new unit on its way to you".

Total down-time 7 days, total effort on my part - finding a cardboard box and a bunch of bubblewrap to pack it in. First rate.

# yay for microsoft!
That means you only had to spend 7 days scratching discs yourself :)

# To be fair it's been way more reliable than my old PS2 was.
With the obvious exception of the incident referred to above.
