I liked it pretty much, despite of all thingsJackson filled in the simple straight-ahead original plot with the humongousity of Tolkien's world that were left loose or unmentioned in TLotR, though the flashbacks and babbling about Istari and stuff and long shots of midgets running around New Zealand have paced it down a bit. In the end, it is possible that you will spend more time watching the movies than reading the book.
The hi-res 3D version was kinda unsettling for my brain because I watched it subtitled and felt weird, but was quite an experience nonetheless.
