I figured that, even if my physics or chemistry is wrong (16 years removed, after all), I'd find a gracious few who'd forgive me!

/my reasoning: energy was transferred and represented by the pain, you see, and the molecules are relatively inert, sort of sticking together... as for whether or not atoms or molecules can do that, I can only say that it's my dim understanding that it's inelastic collisions that cause nuclear fission, and that many molecules bounce off one another and transfer/lose energy all the time without fission. but, of course, that was all top-of-my-head from distant memory.

EDIT: Eh, OK, I'm off to bed! I don't have enough energy left to look all that up to verify. 'Noit!
