They do exist. They're not 'imaginary' in the sense that they don't exist. They're a fundamental element of calculus. An imaginary number is the square root of a negative number. (More specifically, they're x*i, where i=the square root of -1, and x=any real number. eg 5i (5*sqrt(-1)), 12i (12*sqrt(-1)), etc.)
