I've always interpreted them as the cause of the misfortune. So for me having them appear as ghosts in a spooky picture is completely valid, they are there as a bad omen.

(Signs of having had too much to do with b3ta: discussing the nature of teh Quo at three o'clock in the morning (yes I'm on CET))
