click colourise
then adjust away
it is very tricky and takes ages too.

cheat!I think the worth 1000 thing goes something like (don`t have PotatoShop here, so I`m guessing)
- put the image into CYMK mode
- select area, e.g. face, hair, eyes
- turn on the mask thingie so it goes red
- apply a small gaussian blur
- image -> new adjustment layer -> curves
- go back to un-masked mode, and do the same for the rest of the pic
