Get yourself a program called Textpad
You edit ore create files with a .java extension and then Textpad lets you compile them and execute them. It's also free as long as you don't mind clicking the odd button when it kindly suggests that you might give them some money.

textpad`s OK for simple stuff
best tool for the job is probably Eclipse which can be extended to include libraries for J2EE app servers / xdoclet and all sorts of gubbins
