If you really want my opinion...stick witht eh fundamental layouts people are used to, if you want people to hang about - infinate choice = short attention span.
Tweak about with the menus, but keep them fundamentally traditional.

There isn't really infinite choice. Just back, forward, and view.I get what you mean though. I might do something to draw more attention to the index button, so it seems like a main part of the page instead of just an extra bit added on.
