I used to use Mrs Beeton's (appropriately)I think it's 2 of everything, so 2 eggs, 2 oz butter, 2 oz flour, 2 oz sugar, mix it up and bake it.
It's been a while since I used that one though, my last cake was a lot more 'freestyle' with walnuts and bananas and the like.
