It's really detecting the motherboard hardware
not an actual keyboard
This is a good sign.
It could be something simply REALLY crap like a stuck function key - like alt or shift, which is a) causing renaming problems
b) information overload to the system with a constantly repeating key.
I suggest you hoover your keyboard, and hammer the most-used alt/shift/ctrl keys a little to see if it frees up.
Did you try a different keyboard?
