Me too! (/aol)I use the Gimp (because I'm cheap), and I'm pretty new to it all too, but it's all good fun :)
I tend to use plenty of layers - layer masks are damn useful (I assume Photoshop has 'em?).
Alpha channels are also handy for fancy selections, especially for feathering only part of the selection.
