How can I improve my skills at this, is it just down to practice and a steady hand?

and layers....even more layers than drugs. And good source images - go to getty.....and paintshop 7....and an understanding of it's potential (if you crack 5% of it you are doing good). Buy Computer Arts magazine and woo at their efforts.

# Me too! (/aol)
I use the Gimp (because I'm cheap), and I'm pretty new to it all too, but it's all good fun :)
I tend to use plenty of layers - layer masks are damn useful (I assume Photoshop has 'em?).
Alpha channels are also handy for fancy selections, especially for feathering only part of the selection.

PS - WooYay! :)
