I have a theorythat there is a clever web-code-thingamy which sends a message to The Magic Donkey whenever someone posts something like 'FP' or 'Front Page' etc. I think this because it often seems to be the case that good images get FP'd very soon after someone calls for them to be FP'd. It's as if the call has been heard and swiftly acted upon, and I can't think how else The Magic Donkey would notice so quickly that someone had suggested an FP. Apart from magic of course.
