Open Office is compatible, but not yet with Office 07's docx. You just need to save as MS Office. It's a bit slower, the file sizes are a bit large and it misses a few features. But it's FREE! and not MS.

Cheers for that.I've downloaded it, but unfortunately the file I wanted to work with is from 2007, which has now seized up.
I'll have to take it into work tomorrow and save it as a different format. Cheers anyway.

you can download programs which convert from docx to docand open office is going to support the 2007 formats from september :)
