mmorpg''s is that when it comes down to it, they are utter shite. Whatever you think about paying to play the fact is that wow has many millions of players around the world. That's a lot of money that is always being ploughed back into development. The game grows all the time.
There are other games such as everquest, Eve that are long term in this game but they still can't come close to wow because of the userbase and development.
Lord of the rings online tried it and failed, Conan tried and failed even the mighty Warhammer that everyone expected to be a wow beater is losing it's subscribers back to wow now just months after launch.
The fact of the matter is that if you want that kind of online experience then WOW is the place and if you can afford £24 every 3 months then it's worth it for you.
edit:// I meant to mention Guild wars as well, this, like a lot of other games can be played for free but as with all of the free games now it has subscriber content so basically you can't compete if you can't pay.
They are all like this and trust me, I've played most of the more popular ones.

I just stick to FPS, I'd rather not just grind unless there's some kind of ultimate goal, and I'm a student so I have fuck all money as it is :D

I'm not a big fan of FPS but crossovers like Oblivion and Fallout 3 have my attention.
FPS bores the stones out of me in single play and online play seems to be annoying teenagers trying to outl337 each other.
Not played since Quake 2 and unreal tournament 2.
I did enjoy half-life 2 but would never play it online.
At least with wow there are a couple of thousand players on a server at any time so you can just tell the idiot kids to fuck off and go do something else. With CS:S and UT you are stuck with the few goons in the map with you.
