if your entrée is 'wizened bull's pizzle'
but for roast aubergine which takes 10 mins on a barbecue, 25 mins under the grill and 30-45 mins in a moderate oven with the idea being just to burn the skin off as if it were paper ( the same as you do when preparing capsicum peppers for stuffing and roasting ) then they look a bit off-putting for my tastes.
