I think it's referring to the game 'Elite'
An early computer space-trading game, which could feature long and boring flights between planets, with little else to look at but a small radar screen and a 'moving starfield'. Occasionally the tedium might be relieved by being attacked by another crudely-modelled spaceship.
Thus, sweetening your tea one granule of sugar at a time is a fair way to pass the time waiting for a small circle to get bigger (appraoching a planet).
