The argument has always beenthat if an officer or NCO were to have a relationship with any of their men it would affect their ability to make rational decisions about sending them into dangerous situations.
However, some units in the Athenian army were made entirely of gay couples, and they did alright. They kicked the shit out of the Spartans for starters.
