Storytelling,as an art form, is inherently unoriginal as the best stories are those that follow established formula and have traditional character archetypes. Star Wars is basically Robin Hood in space, after all. Lord of the Rings is basically the Iliad, The Incredible Hulk is Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Superman is Jesus and Battle Star Galactica is Exodus (although those last two are on purpose).
Plus, I hated every single Star Wars movie ever made, but I derived enjoyment from watching Star Trek, and that has to count for something.
Anyway, in Star Trek the ship that can destroy planets is from the future.
