I can imagine there are a number of subreddits out there dedicated to resentful pre-op trans woman neckbeards that probably quite easily reach the 16K active user count.
It's not exactly what I'd call a significant public reaction.
The only thing I really take exception to is the BBC's decision to publish a complete non-story like this in the first place. It's practically verging on concern trolling. No reasonable person is going to call somebody transphobic because they don't want to have sexual relations with a transgender/transexual individual. The fact I don't want to have sex with Zachary Quinto doesn't make me a gay basher.
At the end of the day, if you don't want to fuck somebody, you certainly don't owe that person an explanation as to why not. If a simple "no thanks" isn't enough then I'd probably start giving that individual a rather wide berth.
